Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Camphor has a long history of traditional use in the treatment of various skin conditions, including minor infections, itchiness, and irritation. In Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and other folk remedies, camphor is often applied topically for its perceived antimicrobial, cooling, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is commonly found in ointments and balms for skin ailments such as fungal infections, eczema, and minor wounds. However, modern scientific evidence directly supporting the use of camphor for treating skin infections is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest that camphor may have mild antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and fungi, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most contemporary uses in over-the-counter products focus on camphor's ability to relieve itching and irritation rather than to directly treat infection. Additionally, improper or excessive use of camphor can cause skin irritation or toxicity, especially in children. Therefore, while its use is primarily justified by tradition, and there is some preliminary scientific rationale, the level of evidence supporting camphor’s efficacy in treating skin infections remains low.
