Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Clerodendrum phlomidis has a longstanding history of use in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Siddha, where it has been applied for the treatment of various skin infections and diseases. Historically, different parts of the plant, especially leaves and roots, have been used externally as poultices or pastes to treat skin ailments including wounds, boils, ulcers, and other infections. The rationale for its use is largely based on its reported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties as described in these traditional medicinal texts.

There is some preliminary scientific evidence in support of its antimicrobial activity. Limited in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from Clerodendrum phlomidis possess antibacterial and antifungal effects against a range of pathogens commonly implicated in skin infections. However, high-quality clinical studies in humans are lacking, and most of the available data come from laboratory experiments or animal models. This means that while traditional use is strong and there is some scientific plausibility, robust clinical validation is not yet available. Therefore, the evidence rating is moderate, reflecting strong tradition with early but incomplete scientific support.
