Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Croton seeds, derived from plants of the genus Croton (notably Croton tiglium), have a longstanding history in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Historically, croton seeds have been used for their potent purgative properties, but topical applications have also been documented. In the context of skin infections, traditional uses include the topical application of croton seed oil or preparations to treat chronic ulcers, scabies, and other skin afflictions. However, the use is primarily based on anecdotal or empirical tradition rather than robust scientific validation.

Despite this traditional usage, croton seeds and their oil are known to be highly irritant and even toxic, owing to the presence of phorbol esters and other compounds. Modern scientific studies have not substantiated the safety or efficacy of croton seeds for treating skin infections. In fact, contact with croton oil can cause severe inflammation, blistering, and dermatitis. Therefore, while croton seeds have a traditional reputation for treating skin conditions, there is minimal scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness or safety for this purpose, and their use is generally discouraged in modern medicine due to toxicity concerns.
