Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Deer products, particularly deer antler (also known as "lu rong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine), have a long-standing history of use in various traditional medicine systems. In Chinese and some East Asian folk medicines, deer antler is believed to have tonic properties and is sometimes used to promote healing, vitality, and recovery from illness, including skin ailments such as ulcers, wounds, and infections. However, these uses are rooted in traditional healthcare practices and anecdotal evidence rather than modern biomedical research. There is little to no high-quality scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of deer-derived substances in directly treating skin infections. Most available studies focus on general immune-modulating or regenerative properties of deer antler extracts rather than targeted clinical trials on skin infections. As such, while deer products are referenced in traditional contexts for skin health, especially for promoting wound healing, their use for treating skin infections is not substantiated by robust scientific data, and the evidence supporting their efficacy is weak and primarily historical or theoretical.
