Evidence supporting the use of: Desmodium molliculum
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Desmodium molliculum, known as “manayupa” in traditional Peruvian medicine, has a well-documented history of use for treating skin infections, wounds, and other dermatological conditions. Ethnobotanical studies from Peru and other parts of South America report that indigenous and rural communities apply poultices or decoctions of the plant topically to treat infected wounds, boils, and skin irritations. The traditional use is primarily based on empirical knowledge passed down through generations rather than on controlled clinical studies.
Some preliminary phytochemical analyses indicate that D. molliculum contains flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, compounds known for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro studies (e.g., Rojas et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2003; Bussmann et al., Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine, 2007) show that extracts of the plant may inhibit growth of certain bacteria and fungi associated with skin infections. However, these studies are limited in number and do not provide strong clinical evidence. No rigorous human trials or comprehensive pharmacological evaluations have been published to date.
Overall, while the use of Desmodium molliculum for skin infections is strongly supported by traditional medicine, scientific validation remains limited. The evidence rating reflects the predominance of traditional knowledge with some weak preliminary scientific support.
