Evidence supporting the use of: Euryale
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Euryale ferox, commonly known as fox nut or makhana, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, Euryale seeds are believed to possess properties that support skin health and are sometimes employed for treating skin infections, eczema, and other dermatological concerns. In Ayurveda, Euryale is considered to have cooling, astringent, and anti-inflammatory qualities, which are thought to soothe irritated or infected skin when applied topically or consumed as part of a therapeutic regimen.
However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. Some preliminary laboratory studies have identified the presence of bioactive compounds in Euryale seeds, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, which have demonstrated antioxidant and mild antimicrobial activities in vitro. These findings offer a partial explanation for the traditional use of Euryale in managing skin conditions, as oxidative stress and microbial infection are common factors in skin disorders. Nonetheless, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or comprehensive scientific reviews directly evaluating the efficacy of Euryale in treating skin infections in humans. As such, while its use is rooted in tradition and supported by some laboratory evidence, strong scientific validation is lacking.
