Geranial, also known as citral A, is a monoterpenoid and a key component of several essential oils, particularly lemongrass oil. Scientific studies have shown that geranial possesses notable antimicrobial properties, including antibacterial and antifungal effects. In vitro research has demonstrated that geranial can inhibit the growth of a variety of skin pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. These findings provide a rationale for its inclusion in topical formulations aimed at supporting the management of minor skin infections or preventing microbial contamination. However, the current body of evidence is largely limited to laboratory studies and lacks robust clinical trials on humans that confirm its effectiveness and safety when used on skin infections. The historical use of essential oils containing geranial for skin health is also noted, but the scientific validation remains preliminary. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for the use of geranial in supporting skin infection treatments, especially as an antimicrobial agent, the evidence is not yet strong or comprehensive enough to warrant a higher rating or to replace established medical therapies. Further research, especially clinical trials, is needed to fully substantiate its therapeutic potential and safety profile for treating skin infections.
