Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Immortelle (Helichrysum italicum), also known as everlasting or curry plant, has a long history of traditional use in Mediterranean folk medicine for treating skin conditions, including infections, wounds, and irritations. The essential oil is often applied topically for its reputed antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts and essential oils from Helichrysum species possess antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and fungi, supporting the rationale for its traditional use on skin infections. However, these studies are generally limited to laboratory settings and do not provide strong clinical evidence in humans. Most of the support for Immortelle’s use in treating skin infections remains anecdotal and based on traditional herbal medicine practices, with only limited preclinical data to back up these claims. As such, while there is some scientific interest and preliminary evidence, the primary justification for using Immortelle in skin infections is traditional rather than robustly scientific.
