Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lemon Eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) essential oil has a history of traditional use for skin infections and related ailments. In folk medicine, especially within Australian indigenous communities, the leaves are used for their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. The oil contains citronellal, which has been shown in laboratory studies to possess antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and fungi. However, clinical evidence in humans is limited, with most studies focusing on its use as an insect repellent rather than as a treatment for skin infections. Some in vitro research supports antimicrobial effects, but these findings have not been robustly translated into clinical practice. Thus, while Lemon Eucalyptus has a basis in traditional medicine for skin support and there is some preliminary laboratory data, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Use for skin infections should be approached cautiously and not as a replacement for evidence-based medical therapies.
