Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for various ailments, including skin infections and inflammatory skin conditions. Scientifically, several studies support its efficacy for skin health, particularly due to its active compound glycyrrhizin, as well as flavonoids and other saponins. Glycyrrhizin exhibits antimicrobial properties against certain bacteria and fungi, which are relevant in the context of skin infections. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that licorice extracts can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida species, both common pathogens in skin infections.

Moreover, licorice possesses notable anti-inflammatory effects, which can be beneficial in managing skin irritation, eczema, and dermatitis. Topical formulations containing licorice extract have shown potential in reducing redness, swelling, and symptoms associated with inflammatory skin disorders. However, while in vitro and animal data are promising, robust clinical trials in humans are limited. Most available studies are small or preliminary, and thus the overall evidence, while positive, is not yet definitive. Licorice's traditional use for skin conditions is thus supported by emerging scientific validation, particularly in topical applications, but further high-quality clinical research is needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety profile for treating skin infections specifically.
