Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mesua, commonly referred to as Mesua ferrea or "Nagkesar," has a longstanding history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and other South Asian medicinal systems for various skin conditions, particularly infections and inflammatory disorders. The flowers, seeds, and oil derived from Mesua are used topically to treat skin ailments such as wounds, ulcers, and fungal infections. Its application is predicated on its described properties in classical Ayurvedic texts, where it is noted for its "krimighna" (antimicrobial) and "rakta shodhaka" (blood-purifying) qualities, which are believed to help cleanse the skin and prevent infection. While there is some preliminary scientific evidence suggesting that Mesua extracts possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and in animal models, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The traditional use is thus better substantiated by ethnobotanical and historical records than by modern scientific validation. As such, the evidence rating is moderate (2 out of 5), reflecting a solid traditional foundation but limited contemporary clinical research to confirm its efficacy and safety for skin infections.
