Evidence supporting the use of: Oldenlandia diffusa
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oldenlandia diffusa, also known as Hedyotis diffusa or Bai Hua She She Cao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long-standing history of use for various skin conditions, particularly skin infections, boils, and abscesses. Its traditional application is rooted in its classification as a "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" herb, believed to combat "toxic heat" that is thought to cause infections and inflammation in TCM theory. Preparations using Oldenlandia diffusa are commonly applied topically or ingested as decoctions for conditions such as cellulitis, carbuncles, and other purulent skin disorders. Scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited but not entirely absent. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Oldenlandia diffusa possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically be beneficial in treating skin infections. For example, certain studies have demonstrated inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria associated with skin infections. However, these findings are preliminary, and robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. No standardized preparations or dosages have been established, and the efficacy and safety for this indication have not been confirmed in rigorous scientific studies. In summary, the use of Oldenlandia diffusa for skin infections is primarily justified by traditional use, with limited early scientific support that warrants further investigation.
