Privet (Ligustrum species), particularly Ligustrum vulgare and Ligustrum lucidum, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Chinese herbal medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), privet (known as "Nu Zhen Zi") is used for its purported ability to nourish the liver and kidneys, support immune function, and sometimes address skin health, although it is more commonly employed for conditions related to aging, fatigue, and immune deficiency. Some folk remedies have involved the use of privet preparations for skin infections or inflammations, often in the form of poultices or topical applications. However, the direct evidence for its effectiveness in treating skin infections is largely anecdotal and not well documented in clinical literature.

A limited number of laboratory studies have investigated the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of privet extracts, showing some activity against certain bacteria and inflammatory mediators, but these findings are preliminary and have not been translated into robust clinical trials for skin infections. Therefore, while traditional use exists and there is some in vitro scientific rationale, the evidence is weak and not sufficient to recommend privet as a primary or proven treatment for skin infections.
