Evidence supporting the use of: Red Sandalwood
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems for a variety of skin conditions, including infections, inflammation, and to promote healthy skin. The heartwood is typically ground into a paste and applied topically or sometimes used in decoctions. Historical Ayurvedic texts mention its use for skin eruptions, boils, and other dermatological concerns, attributing to it cooling, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.
However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Red Sandalwood may possess mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, but these studies are preliminary and have not been substantiated by robust clinical trials in humans. Furthermore, most research has focused on related species or on general antioxidant properties, rather than on direct efficacy for skin infections. As such, while there is a rich tradition supporting its use for skin health, the current scientific evidence remains weak. In summary, the support for Red Sandalwood in treating or supporting skin infections is primarily traditional, with a low level of direct scientific evidence.
