Rubia cordifolia (commonly known as Manjistha) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for skin health and the management of skin infections. Traditional texts describe Manjistha as a blood purifier and a remedy for various skin ailments, including acne, eczema, and infections. The herb is believed to possess anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and detoxifying properties, which are thought to help clear infections and promote healthy skin. Its application ranges from oral consumption as a decoction to topical application as a paste or oil.

Scientific studies on Rubia cordifolia's effects on skin infections are limited but do exist. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated antibacterial activity against pathogens commonly implicated in skin infections, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. A few reports also note anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and most available evidence is preclinical or anecdotal. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and there is some preliminary scientific support, the overall level of evidence is modest. More rigorous research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety for treating skin infections in humans.
