Evidence supporting the use of: Sarsaparilla (mixed)
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sarsaparilla is traditionally used in herbal medicine to support skin health and treat various skin conditions, including infections. Historical records, especially from traditional Chinese medicine and indigenous practices in Central and South America, report the use of sarsaparilla root (mainly from Smilax species) for treating skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, and various forms of dermatitis. It was also included in 19th-century European pharmacopeias as a remedy for skin ailments, particularly those associated with syphilis and other systemic infections manifesting in the skin.
The rationale for its use is partly based on the plant’s reputed anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. Sarsaparilla contains saponins, which have shown some antimicrobial activity in vitro, and some studies have demonstrated potential anti-inflammatory effects. However, rigorous clinical trials in humans specifically assessing its efficacy for skin infections are lacking. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or derived from traditional use patterns, rather than from modern scientific studies. Therefore, while sarsaparilla continues to be used in traditional herbal formulations for skin health and infections, strong scientific validation of these effects is currently insufficient.
