Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Spilanthes, particularly Spilanthes acmella (also known as the "toothache plant"), has a long history of traditional use for skin conditions, including infections, in various cultures. Ethnobotanical records from regions such as South America, India, and Africa document its use as a topical application for wounds, sores, and other minor skin infections. The plant contains compounds like spilanthol, which is believed to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some preliminary in vitro studies have shown that extracts of Spilanthes exhibit antibacterial and antifungal activity against certain pathogens relevant to skin infections. However, these studies are limited in scope and have not yet translated into robust clinical trials to firmly establish efficacy or safety for human use in treating skin infections. As such, the evidence for its effectiveness is primarily based on traditional use, supported by some early pharmacological research but lacking in high-quality clinical validation. In summary, while Spilanthes is used traditionally for supporting or treating skin infections and some laboratory studies lend plausibility to these uses, the overall level of scientific evidence remains low and should be considered preliminary.
