Evidence supporting the use of: Citronella
For the health condition: Skin (oily)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Citronella has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia, for a range of skin concerns, including oily skin. The essential oil, distilled from Cymbopogon species, has been applied topically for its supposed astringent and antimicrobial properties that may help control sebum production and prevent acne caused by excess oil. However, scientific studies specifically examining citronella's effects on oily skin are limited. Most of the current evidence is anecdotal or based on its general antimicrobial activity rather than direct effects on sebum regulation. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated citronella oil's antibacterial effects against skin pathogens, which could indirectly benefit oily skin prone to acne, but clinical trials in humans are lacking. Furthermore, citronella oil may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals, which is a consideration when assessing its suitability for topical use. Overall, while traditional use supports citronella for oily skin, strong scientific validation is currently insufficient.
