Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Albizia, specifically Albizia julibrissin (also known as the silk tree or mimosa tree), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for calming the mind and supporting sleep, particularly in cases of restlessness and disturbed sleep. The flowers and bark of Albizia are commonly referred to as "He Huan Hua" and "He Huan Pi," respectively. In TCM, Albizia is classified as a "Shen" (spirit) calming herb, and it is traditionally used to treat symptoms such as insomnia, irritability, and emotional distress.

While there are a limited number of preclinical (animal or in vitro) studies suggesting potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and sedative effects of Albizia extracts, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. The few available studies indicate that certain alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids present in Albizia may modulate neurotransmitter systems involved in sleep and mood regulation, such as serotonin and GABA, but these findings have not been robustly validated in people.

In summary, the use of Albizia for restless and disturbed sleep is primarily justified by traditional use in Chinese herbal medicine. There is some early scientific rationale, but the overall evidence base is weak, with a lack of rigorous human studies to confirm efficacy and safety for this purpose.
