For the health condition: Sleep (restless and disturbed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chinese Dodder (Cuscuta chinensis) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), primarily for nourishing the liver and kidneys, supporting vision, and improving reproductive health. Its seeds (Tu Si Zi) are believed to have tonifying properties and are sometimes included in formulas meant to address conditions associated with deficiency syndromes, which may include symptoms such as insomnia or restless sleep, particularly when related to kidney yin deficiency. However, while Chinese Dodder is occasionally mentioned in traditional texts as part of broader sleep-supporting or calming formulations, it is not a primary or widely recognized herb for treating disturbed sleep. Importantly, there is a lack of direct scientific studies or clinical trials investigating the sedative or sleep-modulating effects of Chinese Dodder. The evidence supporting its use for sleep disturbances is therefore rooted in traditional practice, not in modern pharmacological or clinical validation. Current research on Chinese Dodder focuses on antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and reproductive effects, not on sleep. Thus, while its inclusion in sleep-supporting formulas has some traditional precedent, the overall evidence is weak and not directly supportive.
