Evidence supporting the use of: European Mistletoe
For the health condition: Sleep (restless and disturbed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European Mistletoe (Viscum album) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, often as a remedy for hypertension, epilepsy, and as a calming agent. Some folk traditions include its use to address sleep disturbances such as restlessness or insomnia, typically in the form of teas, tinctures, or extracts. However, there is little direct historical documentation specifically linking mistletoe to the treatment of sleep problems; its use appears to be more associated with its general sedative or calming effects.
From a scientific perspective, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence to support the efficacy of European Mistletoe for sleep disorders. Most modern research on mistletoe has focused on its application in oncology (as an adjunctive cancer therapy) and its potential immunomodulatory properties. Only a handful of preclinical studies suggest that certain compounds in mistletoe may have central nervous system effects, but these have not been systematically studied in relation to sleep in humans. As such, the justification for its use in supporting sleep is primarily based on traditional or anecdotal reports, and the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low.
