Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ficus religiosa, commonly known as the sacred fig or "peepal" tree, has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda, for a wide range of health conditions. The use of Ficus religiosa for sleep disturbances or restless sleep is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than strong scientific validation. In Ayurvedic and folk medicine, different parts of the plant, such as leaves, bark, and fruits, are believed to possess sedative and calming properties. Preparations made from the leaves or bark have been used as natural remedies to promote relaxation and alleviate symptoms of insomnia or disturbed sleep.
However, there are very limited scientific studies that directly investigate the efficacy of Ficus religiosa for sleep disorders. Some preclinical research has indicated that extracts of Ficus religiosa may have central nervous system depressant effects in animal models, potentially supporting its traditional use as a mild sedative. For example, studies have shown that certain phytochemicals present in the plant, such as flavonoids and tannins, may contribute to anxiolytic or sedative-like activities. Despite these findings, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the available evidence is not sufficient to confirm its effectiveness for improving sleep in clinical settings. Thus, while the traditional use is documented, scientific validation remains weak and further research is required.
