Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gardenia jasminoides (commonly known as gardenia or Zhizi in traditional Chinese medicine) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, the dried fruit of Gardenia jasminoides is used to "clear heat" and "calm the mind," and it is one of the key ingredients in formulations such as Zhi Zi Chi Tang, which are prescribed for irritability, restlessness, and sleep disturbances associated with heat or agitation. These uses are documented in historical texts including the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage).
Modern scientific evidence for the efficacy of Gardenia jasminoides in treating sleep disturbances is limited. Some preclinical studies have suggested that compounds found in gardenia, such as geniposide and gardenoside, may possess sedative or anxiolytic properties in animal models, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials. No high-quality randomized controlled trials have directly evaluated its effectiveness for insomnia or restless sleep in humans.
Therefore, the use of Gardenia jasminoides for sleep support is primarily based on traditional practices rather than strong scientific validation. Although it is frequently included in traditional formulas for sleep and mood-related issues, more rigorous clinical research is needed to substantiate these uses.
