Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Griffonia simplicifolia is primarily valued for its seeds, which are a natural source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a direct precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of mood, anxiety, and sleep. Several clinical studies have examined the effects of 5-HTP supplementation—including that derived from Griffonia simplicifolia—on sleep quality and disturbances. Evidence suggests that 5-HTP can increase REM sleep and improve subjective sleep quality, particularly in individuals with insomnia or disturbed sleep patterns. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that 5-HTP supplementation reduced the time it took to fall asleep and decreased the number of nighttime awakenings in participants with sleep disorders. However, the number of high-quality studies is still limited, and most research has involved relatively small sample sizes or short durations. Additionally, much of the evidence comes from studies using synthetic 5-HTP rather than direct Griffonia simplicifolia extracts, though the active compound is the same. Overall, while there is a plausible biological basis and preliminary clinical evidence supporting the use of Griffonia simplicifolia (via 5-HTP) for improving sleep, more robust, large-scale trials are needed for definitive conclusions.
