Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Large-Leaved Linden (Tilia platyphyllos), along with other linden species, has a long tradition of use in European herbal medicine as a remedy for sleep disturbances, including restlessness and mild insomnia. Historical sources and ethnobotanical records document the use of linden flowers (often as a tea or infusion) for their calming and mildly sedative effects. The sedative action is generally attributed to a combination of volatile oils, flavonoids, and possibly mucilaginous compounds present in the flowers. Traditional European pharmacopeias list linden for its utility in promoting relaxation and easing stress-related or anxious states that can interfere with sleep.

However, scientific studies directly evaluating the effectiveness of Large-Leaved Linden for sleep disorders are limited and generally of low quality. Most available research is either preclinical (in vitro or animal studies) or consists of small, uncontrolled human studies, often using related Tilia species. Some animal studies suggest mild sedative and anxiolytic effects, potentially mediated by modulation of GABAergic neurotransmission, but clinical confirmation in humans is lacking. There are no large, high-quality randomized controlled trials supporting the efficacy of linden for sleep in humans. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation is limited, and the evidence rating remains modest.
