Evidence supporting the use of: Magnesium citrate oxide
For the health condition: Sleep (restless and disturbed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Magnesium, including forms such as magnesium citrate, is commonly used as a supplement to support sleep and reduce symptoms like restlessness and disturbed sleep. There is a moderate amount of scientific evidence suggesting that magnesium plays a role in sleep regulation, primarily due to its effects on the nervous system and its involvement in neurotransmitter function, such as GABA, which promotes relaxation. Several clinical studies have shown that magnesium supplementation can improve subjective measures of insomnia and sleep quality, especially in older adults or those with magnesium deficiency. However, much of the research has used various forms of magnesium (most commonly magnesium oxide, citrate, or glycinate), and there is no strong evidence that magnesium citrate oxide specifically is superior to other forms for sleep.
While magnesium supplementation appears to be more beneficial in individuals with low magnesium status, the benefits in healthy individuals with adequate magnesium levels are less clear. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally rate the evidence as modest but positive, with improvements noted in sleep onset, duration, and efficiency. Adverse effects are uncommon at recommended doses. In summary, while magnesium citrate oxide is not a first-line therapy for sleep disturbances, there is a reasonable scientific rationale and moderate clinical support for its use in supporting sleep, particularly in those with suboptimal magnesium levels.
