Evidence supporting the use of: Premna
For the health condition: Sleep (restless and disturbed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Premna, particularly species like Premna serratifolia, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. In these systems, Premna is often employed as a component of polyherbal formulations aimed at promoting general health, reducing inflammation, and balancing bodily functions. With respect to sleep disturbances—such as restless or disturbed sleep—there is some traditional precedent for its use, mostly as part of broader calming or nervine remedies. However, Premna itself is not widely cited as a primary or specific sleep aid in traditional texts, and its use for sleep issues is generally secondary to its roles in treating fevers, pain, or digestive issues.
Scientific evidence supporting Premna’s effectiveness for sleep disorders is notably lacking. Very few studies, if any, have directly investigated its effects on sleep architecture, sleep latency, or the neurochemical pathways associated with sleep regulation. Any calming or anxiolytic effects suggested in the literature are mostly anecdotal or derived from its inclusion with other herbs in polyherbal preparations, rather than from Premna alone. Therefore, while there is some traditional rationale for its use in the context of sleep (largely as a supporting herb), robust traditional or scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating restless or disturbed sleep is minimal.
