Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Semecarpus anacardium, commonly known as the marking nut, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of conditions, including improving sleep and managing restlessness. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe its use in formulations aimed at calming the mind, reducing anxiety, and supporting restful sleep, often in combination with other herbs. The traditional rationale is based on the belief that Semecarpus anacardium balances certain doshas (body energies) and acts as a nervine tonic.

However, there is very limited modern scientific research specifically evaluating the sleep-promoting or anxiolytic effects of Semecarpus anacardium. Most available studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. A few animal studies have hinted at central nervous system depressant activity, but direct evidence supporting its efficacy for sleep disorders in humans is lacking. The use for sleep remains primarily justified by traditional practices and historical accounts rather than robust clinical trial data. Therefore, while it is traditionally used for restless and disturbed sleep, the scientific evidence base is weak, and the rating reflects the lack of direct validation.
