Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and some Middle Eastern traditions, for its purported calming effects. Folk remedies have included tarragon tea or extracts as a mild sedative to help with sleep disturbances, anxiety, and restlessness. However, this use is not universally widespread and is far less common than other herbal remedies for sleep such as valerian or chamomile. The mechanisms proposed in traditional use often relate to tarragon’s potential muscle-relaxant effects and its aromatic properties, which might promote relaxation.

Despite these traditional claims, there is very limited scientific research or clinical trials that directly evaluate tarragon’s efficacy for sleep or insomnia in humans. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on historical usage, and pharmacological studies are either lacking or inconclusive. Therefore, while tarragon has some traditional reputation for supporting restful sleep, the strength of the evidence is weak, and it should not be considered a primary herbal remedy for sleep disorders based on current knowledge.
