Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) are prebiotic fibers derived primarily from the cell walls of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Their use in gastrointestinal health is supported by several experimental and clinical studies, primarily in the context of animal health and, to a lesser extent, in human gut health. The rationale for MOS in Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is based on their ability to bind pathogenic bacteria, preventing their adherence to the intestinal mucosa, and possibly modulating the gut microbiota.

There is some scientific evidence that MOS can favorably influence the composition of intestinal microbiota and immune response. Studies in animals (such as poultry and pigs) show reduced colonization of pathogenic bacteria and improved gut barrier function. In humans, clinical evidence is limited and indirect; some small studies and reviews have suggested that prebiotics, including MOS, may help restore microbial balance, but there is no robust, direct evidence from clinical trials specifically evaluating MOS for SIBO treatment or prevention.

Overall, while the theoretical basis and some experimental data exist, the evidence supporting MOS for SIBO in humans is weak, with no large randomized controlled trials directly addressing this use. Thus, the rating is 2/5, reflecting a plausible but not well-established scientific rationale rather than strong clinical validation.
