Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been studied in the context of various gastrointestinal disorders, including Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). The scientific rationale for its use in SIBO is partly based on its known ability to modulate the gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce inflammation. S. boulardii has demonstrated efficacy in preventing and treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection, and some forms of infectious diarrhea. However, direct evidence supporting its use specifically for SIBO is limited. There are a few small clinical studies and case series suggesting that S. boulardii, often in combination with antibiotics or other probiotics, may help alleviate SIBO symptoms or reduce relapse rates. Its benefits may include suppression of pathogenic bacteria, enhancement of local immune responses, and restoration of gut flora balance after antibiotic therapy. Nevertheless, most studies are preliminary, have small sample sizes, or lack robust controls. Consensus guidelines and systematic reviews currently note that while S. boulardii is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, more rigorous clinical trials are needed to firmly establish efficacy in SIBO management. Thus, its use for SIBO is justified by a modest but growing body of scientific evidence, but the overall quality and quantity of data supporting its routine use remain limited.
