Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is a key intermediate in the Krebs (citric acid) cycle and plays a central role in cellular energy metabolism. In the context of small intestine support, there is some scientific evidence, primarily from animal studies and limited human research, suggesting that AKG may benefit intestinal health. Studies in piglets and rodents have shown that dietary supplementation with AKG can improve intestinal morphology, enhance the integrity of the intestinal barrier, promote growth of intestinal villi, and reduce intestinal inflammation, particularly under conditions of stress or injury. These effects are thought to be due to AKG’s ability to serve as a nitrogen scavenger, support glutamine and glutamate synthesis (amino acids vital for enterocyte health), and modulate immune responses in gut tissue. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence is preclinical. Some small-scale studies in humans suggest possible benefits in gut health, especially in cases of critical illness or trauma, but these findings are not yet definitive. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary data supporting AKG’s role in small intestine support, the strength of evidence is moderate at best and more high-quality clinical research is needed to establish clear efficacy.
