Amylase is an enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of starches into sugars and is naturally produced by the salivary glands and pancreas in humans. Its use is scientifically validated in supporting the digestive function of the small intestine, where the majority of carbohydrate digestion and absorption occurs. Supplementation with amylase, either through digestive enzyme products or certain foods, has been studied particularly in individuals with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency or other digestive disorders that impair enzyme production.
Clinical evidence shows that supplemental amylase can improve the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, reducing symptoms like bloating, gas, and diarrhea in people who have insufficient endogenous enzyme production (Trang et al., 2014; Dominguez-Muñoz, 2011). Amylase supplements are often included in pancreatic enzyme replacement therapies, which are a cornerstone of treatment for pancreatic insufficiency and related malabsorptive conditions.
However, in healthy individuals with normal pancreatic function, the benefits of supplemental amylase are less clear, as the body typically produces more than enough of this enzyme to meet digestive needs. Despite this, the scientific consensus supports the use of amylase supplementation in cases of enzyme deficiency, directly benefiting small intestine carbohydrate digestion and nutrient absorption.
