Bacillus species, particularly Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis, are spore-forming probiotics that have been increasingly studied for their effects on gut health, including support of the small intestine. Scientific research demonstrates that these bacteria can survive the acidic environment of the stomach and reach the small intestine, where they may exert beneficial effects. Studies indicate that Bacillus probiotics can help modulate the intestinal microbiota, enhance the intestinal barrier function, and support immune responses within the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. Clinical trials suggest potential benefits for individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and other functional gastrointestinal disorders, with some studies noting improvements in bloating, abdominal discomfort, and regularity. However, while there is a growing body of evidence supporting the use of specific Bacillus strains for general gut and small intestine health, research is still in early stages compared to more established probiotics like Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium. Not all Bacillus species are equally beneficial, and the effects tend to be strain-specific.
