Beta-galactosidase, also known as lactase, is an enzyme primarily responsible for breaking down lactose, the sugar found in milk, into glucose and galactose in the small intestine. The scientific justification for its use in supporting the small intestine, particularly in individuals with lactose intolerance, is well established. Lactose intolerance results from a deficiency of endogenous lactase, leading to gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain upon consumption of dairy products. Supplementation with beta-galactosidase can significantly reduce these symptoms by compensating for the enzyme deficiency and allowing normal digestion of lactose in the small intestine. Multiple clinical trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated that oral beta-galactosidase supplementation improves lactose digestion and minimizes intolerance symptoms in affected populations. Although its primary use is for lactose digestion, by reducing undigested lactose in the small intestine, beta-galactosidase indirectly supports small intestine health by decreasing fermentation by gut bacteria and subsequent gastrointestinal discomfort. However, its benefits are specific to lactose intolerance and do not extend broadly to other small intestine disorders. Nonetheless, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in this context is robust, as reflected in recommendations by authoritative bodies such as the National Institutes of Health and the European Food Safety Authority.
