Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium longum
For the body system: Small Intestines
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bifidobacterium longum is a probiotic bacterium that is naturally present in the human gastrointestinal tract, including the small intestine. Its use to support small intestinal health is primarily justified by scientific evidence, though the strength of the evidence is moderate rather than overwhelming. Several clinical and preclinical studies have shown that B. longum can exert beneficial effects on the small intestine by enhancing the gut barrier function, modulating immune responses, and inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. For example, research has demonstrated that supplementation with B. longum can increase levels of tight junction proteins, which help maintain intestinal integrity, and can reduce inflammation markers in both healthy individuals and those with gastrointestinal disorders. Additionally, B. longum has been found to produce short-chain fatty acids, such as acetate, which serve as an energy source for intestinal cells and help regulate the intestinal environment.
Despite these promising findings, most clinical studies focus on general gut health or specific conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), rather than isolating effects on the small intestine alone. Therefore, while there is scientific validation for its supportive role in intestinal health, more targeted research is needed to fully elucidate its benefits for the small intestine specifically.
