Bile acids are endogenously produced molecules essential for the digestion and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. Supplementation with bile acids, such as ox bile, is sometimes used in clinical settings, particularly for individuals with compromised bile production due to gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), liver dysfunction, or certain genetic conditions affecting bile acid synthesis. Scientific studies have demonstrated that exogenous bile acids can help restore fat absorption and prevent steatorrhea (fatty stools) in these populations (Ridlon et al., 2016). Bile acids also play a key role in maintaining the health of the small intestine by modulating gut microbiota, promoting intestinal motility, and maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier (de Aguiar Vallim et al., 2013). There is growing evidence that manipulation of bile acid pools can influence conditions such as small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and certain forms of diarrhea. However, the majority of evidence supports their use specifically in cases of bile acid deficiency or impaired bile flow, rather than in the general population for "intestinal support." Routine supplementation is not generally recommended for healthy individuals due to potential adverse effects. In summary, there is a solid scientific foundation for bile acid use in specific clinical scenarios related to small intestine function, but not as a general supplement for intestinal health.
