Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), also known as calabash, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. It is traditionally consumed for its supposed cooling, digestive, and detoxifying effects. In these systems, bottle gourd is often used to support digestive health, including the function of the small intestines, by promoting regular bowel movements and soothing gastrointestinal irritation. It is typically prepared as a vegetable, juice, or in decoctions for this purpose.
However, the scientific evidence supporting bottle gourd's specific benefits for the small intestines is limited.
