Chicory (Cichorium intybus) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. It is commonly used to support digestive health, including the function of the small intestine. Traditionally, chicory root has been consumed as a tea, coffee substitute, or dietary supplement to promote digestion, reduce inflammation, and act as a mild laxative. Its use for the small intestine is primarily based on its content of inulin, a type of prebiotic fiber that can nourish beneficial gut bacteria. This prebiotic effect is believed, in folk medicine, to improve overall gut health, which includes the small intestine’s function in nutrient absorption and immune defense.
While there is some scientific evidence supporting chicory’s prebiotic properties and benefits to gut microbiota, direct research specifically targeting the small intestine is limited. The majority of available studies evaluate chicory’s impact on general digestive health, bowel regularity, and colonic microbiota rather than exclusive effects on the small intestine.
