Chicory fiber, also known as inulin, is a type of prebiotic fiber found in the root of the chicory plant (Cichorium intybus). Its use to support the small intestines is primarily based on scientific research. Inulin is not digested in the human small intestine; instead, it passes into the colon where it is fermented by beneficial gut bacteria. This fermentation process supports the growth of healthy bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, which can indirectly benefit intestinal health. Scientific studies indicate that supplementing with inulin can improve gut microbiota composition, enhance mineral absorption (such as calcium and magnesium in the small intestine), and promote bowel regularity. However, most of the direct action of chicory fiber occurs in the colon rather than the small intestine. Some research does suggest that inulin may positively affect the mucosal lining and immune function of the entire gut, including the small intestine, but these effects are less well-characterized. Side effects may include bloating or gas, especially in sensitive individuals. Overall, while there is good scientific evidence for the general gut-health benefits of chicory fiber, the direct support specifically for the small intestine is moderate and not as robust as for the colon.
