Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various European folk remedies, to support digestion and intestinal health. Traditionally, fennel seeds are chewed after meals to relieve bloating, gas, and indigestion—symptoms associated with the small intestine’s function. Herbalists have often attributed carminative, antispasmodic, and mild laxative actions to fennel, making it a popular remedy for colic, flatulence, and digestive discomfort. Its essential oils, such as anethole and fenchone, are believed to relax the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, thus easing cramps and promoting healthy intestinal function.
Scientific research on fennel’s direct effects on the small intestine is limited, but some studies support its carminative and antispasmodic properties. Clinical trials have shown fennel preparations can reduce symptoms of infantile colic and functional dyspepsia, both involving small intestinal discomfort. However, most studies are small or combine fennel with other herbs, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions about its efficacy for the small intestine alone. Overall, fennel’s use for supporting small intestine health is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with limited but promising scientific support for its general digestive benefits.
