Glucose plays a crucial role in supporting the small intestines, with strong scientific validation for its use, particularly in oral rehydration therapy (ORT). The small intestine is responsible for the absorption of nutrients, including glucose, and glucose is known to stimulate the sodium-glucose co-transporter 1 (SGLT1) in the intestinal lining. This mechanism is the foundation for oral rehydration solutions (ORS), which are used worldwide to treat dehydration caused by diarrhea. The addition of glucose to ORS facilitates the absorption of sodium and water in the small intestine, thereby enhancing hydration and electrolyte balance. This principle has been validated by extensive clinical research and is endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF as a life-saving therapy, particularly in children with acute diarrhea. Glucose itself is not used to "heal" or "support" the small intestine in a general sense, but its specific role in promoting effective absorption of water and electrolytes is well documented. There is less evidence for glucose supplementation in a healthy person for supporting small intestine function beyond its basic role as a nutrient, but its physiological importance in the context of rehydration and nutrient absorption is clear and scientifically validated.
