Glutamine alpha-ketoglutarate (GAKG) is a compound combining the amino acid glutamine and alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG), a key intermediate in the Krebs cycle. Glutamine itself has been extensively studied for its role in supporting small intestine health, particularly in conditions of stress, injury, or disease. The intestinal mucosa uses glutamine as a primary fuel source, and supplementation has been shown to help preserve mucosal integrity, reduce intestinal permeability ("leaky gut"), and support recovery after injury or surgery. Clinical trials have demonstrated benefits of glutamine supplementation in reducing the incidence of infections and improving outcomes in critically ill patients, though the effects can be variable and are most pronounced in individuals with increased metabolic needs.

Alpha-ketoglutarate, on the other hand, is involved in energy metabolism and may exert additional protective effects on gut tissue by supporting cellular energy and modulating the immune response. The combination as GAKG has been less directly studied than glutamine alone, but the rationale is that AKG may enhance the utilization of glutamine and provide synergistic support for intestinal cells.

Overall, the use of glutamine (and by extension, GAKG) for small intestine support is backed by moderate scientific evidence, especially in clinical settings involving increased metabolic stress. However, more high-quality, direct studies on GAKG itself are needed to fully establish its efficacy for this purpose in healthy populations.
