Glycomacropeptide (GMP) is a bioactive peptide derived from κ-casein during cheese production and is found in whey. There is emerging scientific evidence to support its use in supporting small intestine health, though the strength of evidence is moderate rather than strong. Research has shown that GMP possesses prebiotic properties, selectively promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal health. In vitro and animal studies suggest that GMP may help modulate immune responses in the gut, reduce inflammation, and inhibit the adhesion of certain pathogenic bacteria to the intestinal mucosa. These effects could contribute to improved intestinal barrier function and overall gut health.

However, most of the studies to date have been preclinical or conducted in animal models. There are a limited number of human clinical trials, and those that exist often involve specific populations, such as individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), for whom GMP provides a nutritionally adequate, low-phenylalanine protein source. Some studies in these populations have indicated potential benefits for gut microbiota composition, but the research is not yet robust or widespread. Thus, while the biological plausibility and preliminary data are promising, further well-designed human studies are needed to fully validate GMP’s use for supporting small intestine health.
