Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is a type of antibody that plays a critical role in immune defense, particularly in neutralizing pathogens and toxins. Orally-administered IgG, often derived from bovine serum or colostrum, is used in some dietary supplements aimed at supporting gut health, including the small intestine. Scientific studies, particularly those involving bovine immunoglobulins, suggest that supplemental IgG can bind to microbial antigens and toxins in the gut lumen, thereby preventing their attachment to the intestinal mucosa and supporting mucosal immunity. Some clinical evidence indicates that serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin (SBI) may help manage symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), likely through modulation of gut barrier function and immune responses. However, the evidence base is still emerging, and most studies are small or of moderate quality, leading to a moderate evidence rating of 3.
