Kluyveromyces marxianus is a non-pathogenic yeast used in various applications, including dairy fermentation and as a probiotic. There is emerging scientific evidence suggesting potential benefits for gut health, which includes the small intestine, but the evidence is still preliminary and limited in scope. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that K. marxianus can survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract, adhere to intestinal cells, and modulate immune responses. For example, it has been shown to secrete enzymes such as inulinase and β-galactosidase, which may assist in the digestion of certain carbohydrates in the small intestine. In addition, a few studies have reported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically support intestinal barrier function and reduce pathogenic bacterial colonization.
However, compared to more commonly used probiotics like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, the body of clinical evidence for K. marxianus is much smaller. There are only a handful of human studies, and most have been conducted in vitro or in animal models. Because of this, while scientific rationale exists for its use in supporting the small intestine, current evidence is not strong or conclusive. Thus, it receives a moderate evidence rating, reflecting potential but not yet fully validated benefits for small intestine health.
