Lactobacillus brevis is a species of lactic acid bacteria commonly found in fermented foods and as part of the human gastrointestinal microbiota. Its use for supporting the small intestine is rooted in its ability to survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract and transiently colonize the intestine. Scientific studies have shown that certain strains of L. brevis can exert beneficial effects on gut health, including the modulation of gut microbiota, enhancement of the intestinal barrier, and inhibition of pathogenic bacteria. For example, some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that L. brevis can reduce pathogen adhesion and promote the production of short-chain fatty acids, which are important for intestinal health.

However, direct human clinical evidence for L. brevis specifically supporting the small intestine is limited. Most available studies focus on general gut or colonic health, or use multi-strain probiotic formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to L. brevis or to the small intestine in particular. There is some preliminary evidence suggesting that certain L. brevis strains may alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but these effects are not exclusive to the small intestine. Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some preclinical support for the use of L. brevis in gut health, direct evidence for its targeted support of the small intestine is currently modest.
