Lactobacillus casei is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in the human intestine and mouth. Its use to support the small intestine is primarily justified by scientific evidence, although the strength of the evidence varies. Multiple clinical and preclinical studies suggest that L. casei can help balance the gut microbiota, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and modulate immune responses within the small intestine. Some studies have shown that supplementation with L. casei can reduce the incidence and severity of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and may help with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), both of which can involve the small intestine. The mechanism is believed to involve the production of lactic acid and other metabolites that lower intestinal pH, thereby inhibiting harmful bacteria, as well as the stimulation of mucosal immunity.

However, while there is a moderate amount of evidence supporting the general gastrointestinal benefits of L. casei, specific high-quality studies focused exclusively on the small intestine are relatively limited compared to research on the large intestine or general gut health. Most documented effects are derived from broader studies on gut microbiota and immunity. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and moderate evidence for its use in supporting small intestinal health, further research would strengthen the case for targeted effects in this region of the digestive tract.
