Mannans are a type of polysaccharide found in yeast cell walls (notably as mannooligosaccharides, or MOS) and some plants. There is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting their use in supporting the small intestine, particularly in the context of gut health and the modulation of the intestinal microbiota. Studies, especially in animal models (such as poultry and swine), have shown that dietary supplementation with mannans or MOS can help prevent the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria (like Salmonella and E. coli) to the intestinal lining by acting as decoy binding sites. This mechanism can reduce pathogen colonization and support the integrity and function of the small intestine.

Additionally, mannans may have prebiotic effects, selectively stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Some research has also suggested positive effects on the immune response associated with the gut mucosa. However, while the evidence from animal studies is robust, direct clinical trials in humans are limited and more research is needed to confirm similar benefits in human small intestine health. Thus, while there is good scientific rationale and moderate evidence, particularly from non-human studies, the overall evidence rating is moderate (3/5).
