Marine Lipid (Unspecified) and Small Intestine Support: Evidence Synopsis
Marine lipids, which primarily refer to omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as EPA and DHA derived from fish oil and other marine sources, have been investigated for their role in supporting gut health, including the small intestine. Scientific studies suggest that marine lipids can modulate intestinal inflammation and support mucosal integrity. In animal models and some human studies, omega-3 PUFAs have demonstrated the ability to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhance anti-inflammatory pathways within the gut, potentially benefiting inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease, which primarily affects the small intestine.
Additionally, marine lipids appear to influence gut microbiota composition, which can indirectly support intestinal barrier function.
